When first assigned this project, I was skeptical on the topic that I wanted to learn more about. I then thought applying the knowledge I already have obtained through school would help me further along in this project. Through that, I decided that researching health and medicine in the Victorian Era would be something that would highly interest me. Prior to the literature class I am currently taking, I didn't have much knowledge about the Victorian Era. But I did in fact have a lot of knowledge about health and medicine, as that is my line of study. With my prior knowledge of health and medicine and my knowledge of the Victorian era through my literature class, I thought it would be interesting to combine them and learn many different things about each of these subjects. Through this research, my perspective on the health and medicine of the Victorian Era has slightly changed. Before my research, my primary vision of health and medicine in that time period was primarily centered on the overall lack of hygiene and cleanliness in the cities. But after, I realized that because of this lack of hygiene and cleanliness is what triggered the need for the use of medicine and helped out medical fields flourish into what they are today.
Through my research I learned many new things, not only about the Victorian Era but also about health and medicine. This allowed me to better understand the history of medicine and where a lot of vaccines and infections were discovered. There were many things I learned throughout my research including the many different hospitals available during this time period, the role of female nurses in the medical field, and how deadly and infectious some diseases could really be. I am now able to better understand why these infectious disease caused so much death among so many people and can compare the works of modern day health and medicine to that of "medicine" and health portrayed in the Victorian Era.
At first, I was very against the idea of this multi-genre research project and was unable to grasp the concept behind it. I was confused as to what these so called "genres" were supposed to represent. But once I got started on my project and started putting the pieces together, I was able to understand the project and the concepts behind it a lot better. The genres enabled me to dig deeper into the particular topic at hand and allowed me better understand topics throughout the health and medicine of the Victorian Era. Although a research paper would've been a lot less strenuous and time consuming, I do believe this project helped me to look at the topic at a more broad angle instead of primarily focusing on one idea.
It is very important to me that my audience is able to take the information given through this research project and to apply it to future circumstances they may face. Although Victorian Era health and medicine may not be important to many, it is a great way for us to be able to see where our medical fields flourished from and how our medical practices became what they are today.
Through this multi-genre research project I feel like I have accomplished so much more then I ever would. I feel like an expert on Victorian Era health and medicine and look forward to hopefully learning more about it in the future. I have always been fascinated with medicine and where it came from and this project helped answer a lot of those questions. Ultimately, I am very happy with my work on this project and feel very much further educated on the subject of health and medicine in the Victorian Era.
