Dear Reader,
Ever since I was a little girl, I was beyond fascinated with medicine and health and how it helps those who are ill and sick. I chose to create my multi genre research project on health and medicine in the Victorian Era because I find it intriguing to see where our medicine from today comes from, and how it came to be. With our medical fields flourishing today, I was interested on seeing the effects the Victorian Era had on current medicine and health in general in today society. Throughout the class and the novels we have read, we have learned that the economic status of Victorian England was extremely poor. With harsh living conditions in an unsanitary city, the spread of disease was much more common. Through the many diseases that flourished in the Victorian Era, we are able to see the different medicines invented to cure these deadly diseases.
Before I began researching this topic, I knew a fair amount about health and medicine, as that is my primary course of study in college. I am studying to become a physical therapist and through this prior knowledge I am able to apply it to the medical conditions in the Victorian Era. By having current knowledge of the medical practices of our current day and age, we are able to compare that of the Victorian Era and put the puzzle pieces together to better understand the full history of health and medicine.
I was curious to learn the effects of health and medicine in the Victorian Era because I have never had any prior knowledge toward the subject. With this lack of knowledge, I found that questions arose, such as what medicines were discovered during this time period and what caused them to be discovered? Was there a certain doctor/nurse that stood out during this time period? What kind of hospitals were patients treated in? What disease or infections occurred during this time period?
In order to further understand the answers to these questions, I used multiple resources from HPU's online library, as well as other multiple online resources. From these resources, I was able to get a better understanding of the medical events that occurred in that time period as well as answers to all these questions. Through my research, I have learned and discovered a lot of things about health and medicine in the Victorian Era. For example, medicine in this time period was just being discovered or not even discovered yet. Through this, we see things such as "quack" medicines that effected the lives of many people. "Quack" medicines were given by people who pretended to be doctors on the street in order to make an extra buck on the side. I have also learned that Florence Nightingale was the first prevalent nurse in the Victorian Era and helped save the lives of many people.
This research has been a very positive experience for me and has changed my outlook and perspective on health and medicine in the Victorian Era. For example, before researching this specific topic, my common thought about the medicine and health during this time period was rather negative. Through learning about the economic status and the lack of cleanliness in the cities throughout the class, I was able to apply this and knew that the rate of disease in these areas would probably be higher then most. What I didn't consider were the many positives that arise from this era of health and medicine. For example, the effects Florence Nightingale had during this time period, as well as the way she's impacted the medical world today. Also, without the spread of disease we would have never discovered a way to treat and cure them and our medical fields and studies today could be potentially set back drastically.
For this multi-genre research project, I have chosen five different genres that I think best represent health and medicine in the Victorian Era. The first genre consists of a letter to Florence Nightingale asking about her many experiences in the Victorian Era as well as the criticism she must've faced being a female and trying to study medicine in this particular time period. The second genre is a collage of the many different hospitals one was to endure with a medical problem or a mental illness. The third genre will consist of a birth certificate of a young living in the Victorian England at the time. The fourth genre is a Top 10 list of diseases that occurred during the Victorian Era, as well as an explanation of each disease and what treatment, if any, helped to cure them. The fifth and final genre I have chosen is an obituary of a patient that died from one of the deadly diseases in the time period. I feel as if these genres have enables me to get a better understanding of the health and medicine in the Victorian Era.
We couldn't learned all this new and intriguing information without the help of Sarah Jones. Sarah is a twenty-one year old student that attends Johns Hopkins as a medical student and hopes one day to become a doctor. A teacher for one of her classes assigns a project focusing mainly on the Victorian Era and how health and medicine was effected in that particular day and age. She wants to learn everything there is to know about this Era, as she believes this will help her better understand the history behind health and medicine. During her research, she concluded that there were many different kinds of hospitals in the Victorian Era, so she made a collage representing all of them. She then wrote a letter to Florence Nightingale (one of her current heros) with many questions, looking for answers. She then discovers a List of the Top 10 diseases during the Victorian Era, as well as a birth certificate and an obituary. Through this research and discovery Sarah will now be able to present her findings to the class and share with them what she has learned.
